What’s in the name?

What does the term ‘touch typing’ mean to you? Does it conjure up visions of secretarial school and old-fashioned typewriters? Sadly, this is a common thought and one which, in my opinion, needs to change.

Touch typing is more relevant than ever

An essential skill all children should learn

In this digital technological age, touch typing e.g. using all the fingers to type automatically is an essential skill that ALL children should learn at school. And yet, at best, some dabble and never quite learn the skill properly.

Hunting and pecking is not acceptable

You wouldn’t give a child a pencil without instruction and handwriting lessons, yet we give them a keyboard and expect them to hunt and peck their way through life! It’s absurd really when you come to think of it.

Technology is here to stay

So if the technology is here to stay, why aren’t more youngsters learning to type properly? Is the term ‘touch typing’ out of date? Does this even resonate with people or is it something only people of a certain generation understand.

Shall we change the name of touch typing?

I think it might be time for a rebrand and I’m trying to come up with a better name for it. How about digital keyboarding skills? Does that sound more modern and relevant?
