Where Did it All Begin?
Wendy Petersen, Course Director
Hi, my name is Wendy and I am the founder of Type IT! I’m a Mum with two kids, Emma and Tom, and married to David. I am a very keen sportswoman – I love getting outside in the fresh air and enjoy running and competing in half marathons.
I studied at Bath Uni for a degree in Food and Nutrition, but never quite made it into the food industry although I still have a huge passion for food!
Busy Mum And My First Business Launch
I ventured into Graphic Design, and after having my two kids, Tom and Emma, I decided to set up my own business from home. Fast forward a few years, I set up my company ‘Click IT!’ where we provide fun and educational computer clubs in nursery school. In 2004, I won the Orange Small is Beautiful Business Award. I’m proud to say that Click IT! is still going strong today delivering computer clubs in nursery schools all over the south-east of England!
The Start of ‘Type IT!’
Many of the Click IT! children were growing up and I lost count of the number of times that parents asked me about whether I offered touch typing courses!
So as a two-finger typist myself, I decided I wanted to learn but I was completely disappointed with the quality of the courses that were on offer. So I decided to set up my own and in September 2011, Type IT! was born.
My mission was to create a touch typing course designed specifically for children. I didn’t want a course where children were just left to ‘get on with it’ because I knew from my own experience that this doesn’t work. Too often, they just give up.
Our courses have been so successful, we have now adapted them to suit adults too!
I am passionate about teaching EVERYONE to touch type! We are using computers more than ever and are never more than a few paces away from a keyboard. For some children, such as those with dyslexia or dyspraxia, learning to touch type is essential.
This year Type IT! has been shortlisted as a finalist for the West London Business Awards 2022 in the category of Training and Education Provider of the Year. The final will be held at Twickenham Stadium in February.
