This is one of the most common questions I get asked when parents call me.

Why do children need to learn touch typing?

Children are usually recommended to learn how to touch type if they have been recently diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia or dysgraphia. They may be struggling to get their thoughts down on paper or their handwriting may be messy and hard to read. Sometimes it’s painful for them to write for long periods of time.

These recommendations may come via an Educational Psychologist, Occupational Therapist or a SENDCo at school.

Parents are often stressed

Parents can often be stressed and anxious at this time, not quite knowing what to do and how to do it. I like to listen first and foremost and then give my assurances that they have come to the right place.

Designing the course for the child

I then find out more about their child and the problems they are having. I like to also find out a little bit more about how they work best. Do they like to work more independently or prefer more face to face support. I also need to find out timescales – how quickly they need to learn and what pace of learning is going to be right for them.

The Next Steps

This initial conversation is free and can take up to 30 minutes or so. From that conversation I can usually work out what course is going to suit them best. We discuss the options and this is confirmed in writing with parents receiving a comprehensive starter pack. Their tutor is assigned and the course begins.

Every child is different and so we personalise the course from start to finish. It’s what we are good at…and it works!
